Ecuador is one of the easiest countries in South America to enter. Most travelers just show a valid passport at the airport and get a stamp, with no visa, fee or online form. A few rules still catch people out, though: the 90-day limit is counted over 12 months, some nationalities do need a visa, and the GalƔpagos have their own fees and checks. We help travelers with these questions every day at our office in Quito, and this guide collects the rules as they stand in 2026, with links to the official sources.

Do You Need a Visa for Ecuador?

Most travelers do not need a visa for Ecuador. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, New Zealand and most Latin American countries can enter visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days in any 12-month period.

The 90 days are not a calendar year and do not need to be consecutive. If you spent 60 days in Ecuador in March and April, you have 30 days left until the following March. Always check the rules for your own passport before you travel, because Ecuador has added visa requirements for several nationalities in recent years.

Which nationalities need a visa for Ecuador in 2026?

About 45 nationalities must get a visa before traveling to Ecuador, mostly from parts of Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Everyone else can enter visa-free for tourism. The table groups the main cases.

Since September 1, 2025, citizens of these same 45 countries also need a transit (transeĆŗnte) visa for short stays and transits, which costs $80 and does not replace a tourist visa. Visas are requested online through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa portal. If your passport is on this list, apply well before you book flights.

How do you extend your stay beyond 90 days?

You can extend a tourist stay once, for up to 90 more days, by applying online for a “visa de visitante temporal (prórroga turista)” before your first 90 days run out. That gives a maximum of 180 days as a tourist in any 12-month period.

  • Cost: $50 application fee plus $30 for the visa, $80 in total (seniors get a 50% discount).
  • Where: online on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs e-visa platform, as described on the official gob.ec procedure page.
  • Documents: passport valid 6+ months, a passport photo, a criminal record certificate from your home country (apostilled, less than 180 days old) and proof of income.

Apply at least a few weeks before day 90, because the criminal record certificate takes time to get. Overstaying leads to a fine and can affect future entries. For stays longer than 180 days, you need a different visa category, such as a residence visa.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Ecuador, according to both the US State Department and the UK Foreign Office. You also need at least one blank page for the entry stamp.

Airlines can refuse boarding if your passport is too close to expiry, so do not rely on border officers being flexible. Citizens of the Andean Community and Mercosur countries can enter with a national ID card instead. Dual nationals born in Ecuador must enter and exit with their Ecuadorian passport or national ID.

What do you need to enter Ecuador overland from Colombia or Peru?

If you cross a land or river border from Colombia or Peru, you may be asked for a criminal record certificate from your country of residence covering the last five years, apostilled and translated into Spanish. The UK Foreign Office still lists this rule as of September 2026.

Visa holders, diplomats and children under 18 are exempt. Get the certificate before you leave home, because it is very hard to arrange on the road. The main crossings are Rumichaca (near TulcƔn, from Colombia) and Huaquillas (from Peru); note that Huaquillas is a US Level 4 area, so read our Ecuador safety guide before choosing a route.

Entry Requirements for the Galapagos

To visit the GalƔpagos you need a $20 transit control card (TCT, also called the INGALA card) before your flight and must pay the national park entrance fee, $200 for foreign adults, in cash when you land. Your bags are also inspected for foods, plants and animals that could harm the islands.

GalƔpagos requirement (as of 2026)Detail
Transit control card (TCT)$20, bought at the GalƔpagos Government Council counter at Quito or Guayaquil airport before check-in
Park entrance fee$200 foreign adults, $100 under 12; $100 adults from Andean Community or Mercosur countries; under 2 free (since August 1, 2024)
DocumentsPassport, round-trip ticket to the mainland in your name, hotel booking or invitation letter
Health insuranceRequired for tourists, per UK FCDO guidance; carry proof
Maximum stay60 days per year for tourists
BiosecurityBags inspected at the mainland airport and on arrival; cabin sprayed before landing

Leave fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, plants, soil and animal products at home, because the GalƔpagos Biosecurity Agency classifies unprocessed products as restricted or prohibited. Sealed, processed snacks are generally fine but still inspected. You also cannot take sand, shells, rocks or plants off the islands. Arrive at the airport 3 hours early, as the GalƔpagos Government Council recommends. Fees are confirmed on the GalƔpagos National Park website.

Local tip: Bring the $200 park fee in clean $20 bills and keep it in your carry-on. The fee is paid in cash on arrival at Baltra or San Cristóbal, there are no ATMs before the counter, and torn or marked notes are often refused.

Proof of Onward Travel

Ecuadorian immigration can ask for proof that you will leave the country, so keep a copy of your return or onward ticket on your phone. Airlines are more likely than border officers to check it before you board.

A bus ticket out of Ecuador or a flight to a neighboring country usually works. For the GalƔpagos, a round-trip ticket to the mainland is required, not optional.

What can you bring through customs?

You must declare cash or goods of $10,000 or more when you enter Ecuador, and when you leave there is a 5% tax on cash of $1,200 or more. The UK Foreign Office notes that travelers carrying taxable goods or cash over $10,000 should register online at least three days before travel.

Personal items such as cameras, laptops and clothes for your trip are fine. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so there is no need to change money if you arrive with dollars.

Health and Vaccination Notes

No vaccinations are required to enter Ecuador in 2026. A yellow fever certificate was required for travelers from Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil from May 12, 2025, but Ecuador dropped that requirement in late August 2025.

Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health still recommends the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before visiting the Amazon provinces (SucumbĆos, Orellana, Napo, Pastaza, Morona Santiago and Zamora Chinchipe) and Esmeraldas. If you are heading to the Cuyabeno reserve, get it done before you leave home. Travelers who arrive with symptoms such as fever or rash should fill in the ministry’s online health declaration. Quito itself sits at 2,850 m, so read our altitude sickness guide.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended for Ecuador and is required for the GalƔpagos. Ecuadorian law has required foreign tourists to carry health insurance since 2017, although it is rarely checked at the airport.

The US State Department warns that a serious injury in the GalƔpagos typically requires medical evacuation, which can cost $60,000 or more, and that most US health plans do not cover you abroad. Make sure your policy covers adventure activities such as rafting, biking on Cotopaxi and snorkeling.

Local tip: Save a PDF of your insurance certificate, return ticket and GalƔpagos hotel booking offline on your phone. Airport Wi-Fi is unreliable, and the TCT counter and airline staff sometimes ask for all three.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa for Ecuador in 2026?

No. US citizens can visit Ecuador visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days in any 12-month period. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and one blank page for the stamp. If you want to stay longer, you can apply online for a one-time extension of up to 90 days, which costs $80.

Can I stay in Ecuador longer than 90 days as a tourist?

Yes, once. Before your first 90 days end, apply online for the tourist extension (visa de visitante temporal, prórroga turista). It costs $50 plus $30 and needs a passport, photo, apostilled criminal record certificate and proof of income. It gives up to 90 more days, so the maximum as a tourist is 180 days in any 12-month period.

Is there an entry or departure tax in Ecuador?

There is no entry fee for tourists arriving on the mainland, and airport departure taxes are included in international airline tickets. The GalƔpagos are different: you pay a $20 transit control card before your flight and a $200 park fee (foreign adults) on arrival. Leaving Ecuador with $1,200 or more in cash triggers a 5% currency exit tax.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Ecuador?

Not to enter. Ecuador required a yellow fever certificate from travelers coming from Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil starting May 2025, but dropped the rule in August 2025. The Ministry of Public Health still recommends the vaccine at least 10 days before visiting the Amazon provinces or Esmeraldas, so get it if your trip includes Cuyabeno or YasunĆ.

Do Chinese and Indian citizens need a visa for Ecuador?

Yes. Chinese citizens have needed a visa since July 1, 2024, and Indian citizens since August 2019. Both are among about 45 nationalities that must apply online through Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs before traveling. Since September 2025 these nationalities also need a transit visa for short stays or transits. Apply well before booking non-refundable flights.

Can I enter Ecuador with only my ID card?

Only if you are a citizen of an Andean Community or Mercosur country: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru or Uruguay. Their citizens can enter with a valid national ID card. Everyone else needs a passport valid for at least 6 months. For the GalƔpagos, your ID must match the name on your flight and transit card.
