Ecuador is one of the most affordable countries in South America, and it uses the US dollar, so there is no currency math and no exchange fees for US travelers. What you spend depends mostly on three choices: where you sleep, how many guided tours you book, and whether you add the GalĆ”pagos. We plan trips for travelers every week from our office in Quito’s Old Town, so the numbers below are the prices our guests actually pay in 2026.

Daily Budget by Travel Style

A realistic daily budget in Ecuador is $30–55 for backpackers, $60–120 for mid-range travelers and $150–250 or more for comfort travelers, per person. These figures include a bed, three meals, local transport and an average share of tours, but not international flights or the GalĆ”pagos.

Cost Breakdown: Accommodation, Food, Transport, Tours

Accommodation and tours are the two biggest costs on the mainland, while food and buses stay very cheap. Here is what each category costs in 2026.

Accommodation

Hostel dorms cost about $8–15 a night in Quito, BaƱos and Otavalo. Budget hotels and private rooms in hostels run $25–45 for a double, and boutique or luxury stays start around $100. Staying in the Old Town puts you within walking distance of the main sights, which saves on taxis. Our sister hostel, Community Hostel Quito, is on the same street as our office.

Food

A set lunch (almuerzo) with soup, main course and juice costs $3–5 in local restaurants and markets. A sit-down dinner in a tourist area is $8–20, and a craft beer is around $4–6. Mid-range and upscale restaurants add 15% VAT (IVA) and usually a 10% service charge, so check whether the menu prices include them. For cheap, excellent food, read our guide to eating at Quito’s Central Market and our list of Ecuadorian street foods.

Transport

Transport is where Ecuador is cheapest. A Quito city bus costs $0.35 in 2026 (rising to $0.40 in January 2027) and the Metro costs $0.45. Intercity buses cost roughly $1–2 per hour of travel: Quito to BaƱos is around $5–6 and Quito to Lago Agrio (for the Amazon) about $12. From the airport, an official taxi to the Old Town or La Mariscal costs $25–40, an app ride $20–30, or you can take the public bus for about $2. Our airport to Quito guide covers each option.

Tours and attractions

Guided day tours from Quito start at $57.50 and include transport, a bilingual guide and lunch. Multi-day trips cost more but bundle lodging and meals. Real 2026 prices from our own tours:

How much does a 10-day Ecuador trip cost in 2026?

A 10-day mainland trip costs about $420–540 per person for backpackers and $850–1,150 for mid-range travelers if you add BaƱos, or about $670–780 and $1,000–1,350 if you add a 3-day Amazon tour, excluding international flights. The Amazon is the bigger jump because the tour, lodge and meals are bundled into one price.

10 days: 7-day plan + 3 days in BaƱos$420–540$850–1,150$1,900–2,700

Add 5 days of GalĆ”pagos island hopping$420–620 in flights and fixed fees, plus the tour or hotels (see below)

The Amazon line includes the Cuyabeno 3-day tour from $310, the $10 community fee and the bus to the reserve (about $12 each way to Lago Agrio plus about $4 each way to the Cuyabeno Bridge). Meals are included on the tour, so you spend very little while you are there. Not sure whether Cuyabeno is the right Amazon reserve? Compare them in Cuyabeno vs YasunĆ.

Local tip: Carry $5, $10 and $20 bills. Many small shops, buses and taxis cannot break $50 or $100 notes, and some refuse them. Also note that Ecuador charges a 5% tax on cash of $1,200 or more when you leave the country, so do not withdraw far more than you will spend.

7 Ways to Save Money in Ecuador

The easiest savings in Ecuador come from eating set lunches, riding buses and grouping your tours. These seven habits can cut a mid-range budget by a third.

  1. Travel by bus instead of domestic flights when your schedule allows. Most mainland routes are under 6 hours by bus.
  2. Eat where locals eat. A $3–5 almuerzo is filling enough to make lunch your main meal.
  3. Book multi-day packages instead of piecing together day trips. Our 2-day Cotopaxi and Quilotoa trip includes lodging, four meals and transport.
  4. Travel in shoulder season (roughly April to May and September to November) for better hostel and tour availability.
  5. Stay in community-run hostels, which often have kitchens for self-catering and free walking tours nearby.
  6. Withdraw cash in larger amounts to avoid repeated ATM fees, but stay under the $1,200 exit threshold.
  7. Choose land-based island hopping in the GalƔpagos rather than a live-aboard cruise. It is the single biggest saving on a full Ecuador trip.

Start your first day for free: the Free Walking Tour Quito runs Monday to Saturday at 10:30 and 14:30 and Sunday at 10:30, and includes a chocolate tasting and a market visit. Use it with our one-day Old Town itinerary.

How much does a GalƔpagos add-on cost in 2026?

Before you pay for any tour or hotel, a GalĆ”pagos trip costs about $420–620 per foreign adult in flights and fixed fees. The national park entrance fee is $200 for foreign adults (since August 1, 2024), the INGALA transit control card is $20, and a round-trip flight from Quito or Guayaquil usually costs $200–400.

Official fees are listed by the GalƔpagos National Park and the GalƔpagos Government Council. For the timing side of the budget, see our season-by-season GalƔpagos guide.

Is the Galapagos Worth the Extra Cost?

Yes, for most travelers, as long as you choose the right format. Land-based island hopping can cost roughly half of a traditional cruise while still covering the highlight islands, which makes the GalƔpagos more accessible than many people assume.

On our 5-day budget island hopping trips you sleep in hotels on Santa Cruz and Isabela (or San Cristóbal), snorkel at Los Túneles or Tintoreras, see giant tortoises in the Santa Cruz highlands and visit the Charles Darwin Station. Hotels, breakfasts, lunches, activities, snorkel gear and speedboats are included; flights, the park fee and the transit card are not. Read island hopping vs cruises to see what you give up with each option.

Where it may not be worth it: if you only have 7 days in Ecuador in total, spending 4–5 of them on the islands means skipping the Andes and the Amazon. In that case we usually suggest saving the GalĆ”pagos for a second trip, or extending to 12–14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ecuador expensive to travel in 2026?

No. Ecuador is one of the cheaper countries in South America. Backpackers can travel on $30–55 a day and mid-range travelers on $60–120, including a bed, meals, buses and some tours. Set lunches cost $3–5 and intercity buses about $1–2 per hour of travel. The GalĆ”pagos is the exception: fixed fees and flights alone add around $420–620 per person.

How much cash should I carry in Ecuador?

Carry enough small bills for a few days, about $50–100 per person, and top up at ATMs in cities. Markets, buses, small restaurants and park fees are often cash-only, and the $200 GalĆ”pagos park fee must be paid in cash. Avoid $50 and $100 notes, which many small shops refuse, and remember the 5% tax on $1,200 or more in cash when you leave.

Is $50 a day enough for Ecuador?

Yes, on the mainland $50 a day is enough for a comfortable backpacker trip: a hostel dorm ($8–15), three local meals ($10–15), buses and an occasional guided tour. It is not enough for the GalĆ”pagos, where hotels, food and boat trips cost much more, or for a mid-range style with private rooms and daily tours, which is closer to $60–120.

How much is the GalƔpagos entrance fee in 2026?

The GalƔpagos National Park entrance fee is $200 for foreign adults and $100 for foreign children under 12, in force since August 1, 2024. Adults from Andean Community and Mercosur countries pay $100. You pay it in cash when you land. You also need the $20 transit control card, bought at Quito or Guayaquil airport before your flight.

Do I need to tip in Ecuador?

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Mid-range restaurants often add a 10% service charge, so check the bill before adding more. On guided tours, many travelers tip guides around $5–10 per person per day, and on the Free Walking Tour you pay what you think the tour was worth. Taxi drivers do not expect tips.

Can I use US dollars and credit cards in Ecuador?

Ecuador’s official currency is the US dollar, so US bills work everywhere; Ecuador also mints its own coins, which are used alongside US coins. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants in Quito, Cuenca and the GalĆ”pagos, sometimes with a surcharge. In small towns, markets and buses, cash is still the norm.
